Residents in parts of New Jersey and New York took to social media on Tuesday afternoon to report hearing a loud explosion, boom or shaking.
Some speculated that it might have been an earthquake, but the U.S. Geological Survey stated that they have no record of any seismic activity in the area so far.
Social media posts described the noise as a “boom” sound. One New Jersey resident posted on Facebook describing it as something ‘huge fell on my house.”
Facebook groups in Glen Rock and North Haledon, among others, saw posts about people sharing their experience. On the New Jersey subreddit someone in Monmouth County asked about the shaking.
Several people on X, formerly Twitter, posted about the shaking.
Got a Neighbors alert from NJ asking about shaking and and earthquake. I’m also seeing a few tweets from people in NJ, NYC, etc saying they felt something. But there’s nothing on the USGS site. Weird.

Local authorities have yet to confirm the source of the noise.
The stir on Tuesday comes months after the infamous April earthquake, perhaps leaving some people more likely to notice any even somewhat similar activity.
