In an interview with Raj Shamani, Vicky shared his father’s early struggles in their hometown in Punjab. Sham Kaushal, despite holding an MA in English literature, found himself unemployed and feeling hopeless. Vicky revealed, “One day, after drinking with his friends, he declared that he wants to die.” Concerned about his well-being, Vicky’s grandfather decided on a drastic change of scenery and sent Sham Kaushal to Mumbai.
Arriving in Mumbai in 1978, Sham Kaushal faced a new set of challenges. Vicky described his father’s determination, stating, “In Mumbai, my dad was willing to work as a sweeper even, because he knew that nobody in the village would get to know.” Despite the difficulties, Sham Kaushal persevered and slowly began climbing the ranks of the film industry.

Vicky also spoke about his parents’ initial hope for his career path. “My parents were very happy with the idea of me having a regular job,” he said.
