Newbie Lakshya’s path to Bollywood debut wasn’t paved with red carpets. Despite initial excitement, the last few years have been a rollercoaster ride for the actor, marked by the shelving of two major projects and a gruelling debut film that challenged him unexpectedly. In 2019, Lakshya was announced as part of the cast for Karan Johar’s much-anticipated Dostana 2, alongside Kartik Aaryan and Janhvi Kapoor. However, due to “professional circumstances,” the film was shelved. Disappointment struck again in 2022 with the shelving of Bedhadak, a rom-com that was to star Lakshya opposite Shanaya Kapoor. Facing two setbacks in quick succession took a toll on the aspiring actor.

“My first film didn’t work out for me. The second film also didn’t happen for me,” Lakshya confided in a recent interview with News18 Showsha. “Somewhere, I was losing that confidence as an actor and human being. My morale was shaking and going down. It wasn’t like I had given up, but I was constantly asking myself, what’s next?”

The uncertainty fuelled a sense of desperation. “I wouldn’t say I was under-confident,” he clarifies, “but it really affected me deep down. I needed a film desperately. I needed work. I kept hearing that I’ll be making my film debut but it was just not happening. I didn’t know if things would pan out.”

Despite the setbacks, Lakshya’s determination never faltered. Finally, in 2023, his perseverance paid off. He landed the lead role in Kill, a high-octane action film by Karan Johar and Guneet Monga, touted as India’s most violent film ever. The film may not have been the glamorous debut he envisioned, but Lakshya’s performance is receiving critical acclaim.

While Kill marks a successful debut, Lakshya’s experience on the sets of Dostana 2 proved to be a valuable learning ground, even though the film never materialized. Stepping onto a Dharma set was an eye-opening experience for the television veteran. “I was sweating,” Lakshya recalls. “You feel the pressure of being on a Dharma set. I remember having a long walking shot where I didn’t have to say any dialogue. And it’s not like I was excited. I was only nervous.”

“What can be bigger than that for an actor?” Lakshya ponders. “Dostana 2 had a big scale and production value. It was the kind of set you only see on television or the big screen.”

The experience also taught him patience, resilience, and staying grounded. “It took me seven years to make it to Dharma,” he shares. “I learnt that you’ve got to keep working hard, be patient, resilient, and grounded. Yeh sab sirf bolne ki baatein nahi hoti hai (These aren’t just things you say). I took back the value of being hopeful.”

While Kill is receiving critical and audience acclaim, Lakshya is yet to announce his second project.
