MELAKA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has launched a search and rescue operation after a crew member of a cargo ship reportedly fell overboard in Melaka waters.

State MMEA director Maritime Captain Mohd Khairi Abd Aziz identified the crew member as 25-year-old Vishnu Babu from India.

He said his team was alerted by the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre in Johor Baru on the missing crew of MT Resolute at 11.10am on Thursday (July 18) before the operation was launched.

Mohd Khairi said the operation covers an area of 43.5 square kilometres from the spot the crew member was reported missing at 11.8 nautical miles from Klebang shores here.

He added the ship was on its way to Singapore and marine police had also joined in the operation.
