Veteran film exhibitor Manoj Desai has weighed in on the underwhelming box office performance of Kamal Haasan’s recently released film Indian 2. Manoj Desai, Executive Director of G7 multiplex and Maratha Mandir Cinema, reminisced about the immense popularity of the 1996 film Indian, the prequel to Indian 2. He described the electrifying atmosphere in his theatre during its screenings.

When Audience Broke Chairs During Indian Screening
Recalling the release of Indian in 1996, “It was incredible. There was so much whistling in my theatre; many chairs were broken and had to be repaired. That’s what you call a movie. Look at Amar Akbar Anthony by Manmohan Desai ji, Naseeb, and Sholay; these are films. Khuda Gawah played for 15 weeks straight with housefull shows in this very theatre.”
Disappointed with Kamal Haasan
Desai expressed his disappointment with the performance of Indian 2, highlighting the disconnect between audience expectations and the film’s outcome. “I’m very disappointed with Kamal Haasan ji. I can’t understand what went wrong. But of course, he remains an evergreen hero,” he said.
Desai offered his perspective on what might have contributed to Indian 2’s underperformance. He explained the importance of a well-rounded film encompassing strong acting, narrative, and music.
In his words, “Look at all aspects: acting, story, and most importantly, music. Imagine a Bhel Puri without the garlic chutney – it wouldn’t be enjoyable. So put everything together, mix it well, then release the film, and I’ll see how it won’t perform at the box office.”
