Veteran film exhibitor Manoj Desai, known for his outspoken views on Bollywood, has offered some advice to actor Akshay Kumar following a string of box office flops. For the unversed, post the COVID-19 pandemic, Akshay Kumar has seen several films underperform at the box office.
EXCLUSIVE: Manoj Desai urges Akshay Kumar to “be serious about content and choose extraordinary” scripts after box office setbacks
While his action-packed cop drama Sooryavanshi was a commercial success and his social comedy OMG 2 received positive reviews, other projects like Bell Bottom, Bachchan Pandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Ram Setu, Raksha Bandhan, Selfie and the recent Bade Miyan Chote Miyan failed to resonate with audiences. Even Sarfira, a remake of a critically acclaimed Tamil film, has struggled to find its footing at the box office.
Manoj Desai Asks Akshay Kumar to Focus on Content
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Desai addressed the issue and offered his perspective on Kumar’s recent string of flops. He spoke about the importance of focusing on strong content. Desai believes that Kumar should prioritise selecting exceptional scripts with the potential to truly captivate audiences.
In Manoj Desai’s words, “He needs to be serious. I’ve told him this before. We’ve spoken. I told him ‘Sir, you should become serious, and I’ll tell you what to be serious about. Not the acting, but the content. Choose extraordinary content. That’s what will work.”
Manoj Desai on Marketing of Akshay Kumar Films
Desai also raised concerns about the lack of promotions for Kumar’s films. He pointed out that other films like Kalki 2898 AD received more marketing push compared to Sarfira. He questioned the overall promotional strategy surrounding Kumar’s recent releases.
He said, “Nobody’s promoting the films. Kalki 2898 AD was promoted more than Sarfira. What’s happened to Akshay? Why isn’t he promoting his films? There’s no publicity in newspapers about where the film is playing. Everyone has to check BookMyShow to see where it’s showing. That’s not fair.”
