Kareena Kapoor Khan and Karisma Kapoor, two of Bollywood’s most celebrated actresses, come from a family steeped in cinematic history. Their grandfather, Raj Kapoor, was a pioneer of Indian cinema. However, despite their lineage, the sisters’ journeys to stardom were paved with their own struggles and triumphs.
Kareena Kapoor credits Karisma Kapoor for reviving Kapoor family name in the 1990s: “My mum Babita, Neetu aunty had stopped working”
In a recent interview with The Week, Kareena shed light on Karisma’s pathbreaking role in reviving the Kapoor family’s cinematic legacy. Karisma, who became a superstar in the 1990s, was the first woman from the Kapoor clan to enter the film industry. This decision marked a significant shift within the family, where the tradition was for women to take a backseat after marriage. Neither Raj Kapoor’s daughters nor his daughters-in-law pursued acting careers.
Karisma’s entry into Bollywood wasn’t without its challenges. “The early years were difficult for her,” Kareena said, “because it was like the first time anybody from the family… Their mother, Babita, and aunt, Neetu Kapoor, had also given up acting after marriage. This shift, however, hinted at a changing mindset within the family.
While their father, Randhir Kapoor, was supportive, his approach was unconventional. He believed in self-reliance and wouldn’t pull strings for his daughter. “If you want to do this, you must try on your own and figure it out,” Kareena quoted him as saying.
Karisma’s perseverance paid off. Her success as a leading actress not only established her own identity but also “resurrected a home,” as Kareena aptly described it. Raj Kapoor had passed away, and their father’s career wasn’t at its peak. Karisma’s rise to stardom brought back the Kapoor family’s cinematic glory. “She [Karisma] was actually the first female Kapoor who became this big sensation and star,” Kareena shared.
Kareena acknowledges the privilege of having a successful sister pave the way. By the time she entered the industry, the doors were already ajar. “A lot of our family members were more accepting” when Karisma started her journey, Kareena said. The audience, too, was eager to see the next Kapoor scion make her debut.
