After six Aussies teed off at Royal Troon for the 152nd edition of The Open this weekend, just two remain to contest the weekend after a brutal opening two rounds decimated the field.
Jason Day, at -1 after an impressive three-under 68 in the second round, is in contention, currently tied for seventh entering the third round and six shots off the pace set by Shane Lowry (-7).
Adam Scott, who had high hopes this weekend after a strong performance at the Scottish Open last weekend, slumped to a 6-over 77 on Saturday that saw him tumble to five-over.
But none of the other Australians managed to make it to six-over or better after two rounds, that unusually high cut-line showing just how torrid conditions were at the Scottish links course.
Day excels in bad weather, not dropping a single shot in the second round, though he admitted he dislikes playing in the conditions.
“My wife calls me a mudrunner. Typically when the weather gets worse, I start playing a bit better,” he said, according to Golf Australia.
“I don’t know why. I actually dislike playing in bad weather, but I just feel like most people, their attitude just gets worse, and you know that if you can kind of have a good attitude, that you’ll play better in the end.”
The forecast for Saturday’s third round shows winds easing due to the presence of rain, which shouldn’t be too heavy but is likely to be fickle – as has been the case for the first two days.
