A Japanese odyssey for big dreaming Lilliana - MASHAHER

The captivating music and rich culture of Japan first lured Lilliana Davis in primary school, launching a passion that continued through to the HSC where she achieved marks in the highest bands for both Japanese Continuers and Extension.

Lilliana Davis attended high school in Japan in 2019 only strengthening her passion for the country.

The Gosford High School graduate said her commitment deepened when she visited Japan. In 2019 she attended Kokubunji High School as part of an excursion with her school, where she learnt traditional ikebana (flower arrangement) and attended many bunkasai (cultural festivals).

“The passion I had for Japanese culture is what gave me the drive to master the language – it’s important to enjoy what you are learning so it can come to you more naturally,” Davis said.

Graduating in 2023, Davis’s high school journey was highlighted by numerous achievements – from her high results in Japanese, to starring in creative arts productions Starstruck and the School Spectacular.

“I think it’s important to practise until you have perfected something. Set time aside every day to learn,” she said. “There are so many moments in life where you can turn it in to something more educational – sitting in the car listening to music, reading the news from other countries.”

Now enrolled at the University of Sydney, Davis is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts and Advanced Studies, majoring in English and Linguistics, thanks to the Dallyell Scholarship. She has deferred those studies for a year to complete a Diploma of Acting at the WA Academy of Performing Arts.

“One day I hope to combine my passion for languages, writing and performance by taking part in creative pieces that explore humanity, life and language,” said Davis. “My advice is to dream big and embrace your passions. Success comes from dedication and a willingness to learn and immerse yourself.”
