KOTA KINABALU: A Royal Brunei service man was killed after the high-powered motorbike he was riding collided with a vehicle during a motorcycle convoy in Sabah’s interior Keningau district.
Sgt Majir Mohammad Joeriman Abdul Latif was rushed to the district hospital following the incident at KM39 Jalan Keningau-Tambunan at about 10am on Saturday (July 20).
However, the 40-year-old succumbed to serious injuries about five hours later.
Keningau police chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said the victim was part of a convoy with four other motorcycles.
He said they were heading to Sandakan to attend a motorbike fest in the east coast district.
He added that when they reached the would-be accident scene, a four-wheel drive vehicle driven by a 70-year-old man came out from a junction into the main road.
“The victim tried to avoid a collision by veering to the right but instead crashed onto the front right side of the vehicle,” he said when contacted on Sunday (July 21).
Supt Yampil said the victim was thrown under the vehicle while his motorbike ended up in the right lane.
“He was rushed to the Keningau Hospital but was pronounced dead by a medical officer at the emergency ward at 2.56pm,” he said.
He added that the driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle had been detained for questioning under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
