KOTA KINABALU: Firemen cleared up an ammonium nitrate spill on a remote road in the Tawau district on Sunday (July 21).
The incident occurred after a 10-tonne lorry carrying the chemical crashed and landed on its side on Jalan Nabawan-Kalabakan.
Tawau Fire and Rescue station chief Jemishin Ujin said they were alerted to the incident at 3.05pm.
He said two people were travelling in the lorry when the mishap occurred.
“However, when we reached the location, the victims had already been sent to the hospital,” he said.
Their condition was not immediately known.
He said the location was quite remote as it was some 138km from the station, adding the fire team only reached the area at 5.35pm.
“Our men then proceeded to clean the area. There was a white, powdery substance on the road and we took some two hours to clean it,” said Jemishin.
He said firemen ensured no residue was present at the location before ending the operation at 7.10pm.
