QuickCheck: Is the govt cybersecurity agency being impersonated by scammers again? – MASHAHER

CALLS from government agencies tend to get taken seriously, especially when they’re from an agency that, among other things, helps keep people safe online.

One such agency is CyberSecurity Malaysia, the government’s electronic information and network security specialist.

Recently, it has been claimed that scammers are impersonating CyberSecurity Malaysia officers in phone calls to people. Is this true

VERDICT:

TRUE

CyberSecurity Malaysia confirmed this in a Facebook post, in which it warned people receiving such calls to not disclose any information to people posing as officers of the agency.

” We would like to clarify that our organization never makes unsolicited phone calls for any illegitimate purposes or requests personal information as claimed by irresponsible parties,” it said.

It then gave three steps through which people can protect themselves from being scammed

” Do not reveal personal information. Never provide your personal or financial information to unknown individuals via phone calls,” said CyberSecurity Malaysia.

It added that those receiving suspicious calls should contact CyberSecurity Malaysia directly to confirm the caller’s identity.

“Report suspicious calls. Promptly report any suspicious calls to the relevant authorities,” it added.

CyberSecurity Malaysia then said that those who receive suspicious calls should ignore them and report them immediately to the agency via email at [email protected] or by calling 1-300-88-2999.

“Your cooperation and vigilance are greatly appreciated in our efforts to combat this fraud,” said CyberSecurity Malaysia.
