Corpus Christi police officers fatally shot a man who they said confronted them with an “assault type weapon” at a Southside apartment complex on Monday night.
Police responded to a call of a disturbance at 9:40 p.m. at the Four Winds Apartments at 4101 Brett St., according to a news release published on the Corpus Christi Police Department blotter by CCPD Senior Officer Jennifer Collier.
When officers arrived, the man came out of the apartment and asked officers if they were ready to die, according to the news release. He then “produced an AR assault weapon,” the release said, when he came back out of the apartment, confronting the officers.
Police did not say whether the suspect pointed a gun at or fired at any of the officers.
Officers responded by firing their primary weapons, striking the man, who retreated into the apartment and shut the door, the news release said.
The neighboring apartments were cleared. Police entered the man’s apartment and found him dead.
CCPD Chief Mike Markle said Monday night that officers took extensive care to make sure that no one in the area was harmed before they entered the apartment.
Markle said he did not know the man’s name or age or how many rounds were fired but that the department will share that information when it’s available.
Two officers who responded to the incident will go on administrative leave. No officers were injured.
