Monmouth University ordered a lockdown of its main campus in West Long Branch in the early hours of Tuesday, July 23, due to an “active investigation.” Students were told to shelter in place around 1:30 a.m.
As of 5:45 a.m., the university said police were “continuing their investigation and building search. Please continue to shelter in place. Updates will be shared when available.”
At 4:14 a.m., the school posted “University Police are continuing their investigation. Please continue to shelter in place” on its website.
At 1:32 a.m., the school originally posted about the lockdown, saying “There is an emergency at Monmouth University. A lockdown is in effect. This is not a drill. Please close and lock all doors and await further instructions.”
An update at 2:13 a.m. read “Monmouth University police, assisted by outside agencies, are checking various areas on campus at this time. Please continue to shelter and place.”
Around 3 a.m., the school said that university police, assisted by outside agencies, were checking all residence halls.
The university also posted an update on social media, answering one poster’s question by saying “There is an active investigation. Updates will follow as available.”
