A North Carolina man was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman three separate times outside a North Myrtle Beach bar.
Douglas Horace Steadman Jr., 49, of Lexington, was charged on July 21, 2024, with kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault.
Steadman is accused of forcibly confining the victim and not allowing her to leave and then forcing the woman to have unwanted oral and vaginal sex during a 20 to 25 minute time period, according to an arrest warrant.
North Myrtle Beach Police received a call about 11:35 p.m. July 20, 2024, in regards to a sexual assault on Main Street. When police arrived, they found a crowd shielding a woman wrapped in a towel, a police report said.
The woman told officers that she had been sexually assaulted at the location and gave police a description of the man. The woman had injuries to her mouth and blood on both her hands. She was transported to the hospital for evaluation, the report said.
She told police she was missing her clothes, shoes, cell phone, debit card and driver’s license.
She told police that she was alone at the Sky Bar, 214 Main St., and had a few drinks. The suspect joined her on the dance floor and then proceeded to tell her that she was too drunk and that the establishment was going to kick her out. He then escorted her down the stairs and into a dark area. He then sexually assaulted her, the report said.
The suspect then left and came back, taking off her clothing and assaulting her again. She told officers that she repeatedly told him “no,” but he proceeded to fight her, placing his hands over her mouth and nose and making it hard for her to breathe, the report said.
She believes she blacked out at one point. She told officers that the man left her three times and came back, each time assaulting her.
On the final time, she was able to crawl away to a place where people could see her, the report said.
Police were able to identify Steadman from the bar’s video footage and the fact that the business scans identification cards when a person enters, the report said.
He remains in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.
