A well-known metro Phoenix home inspector with hundreds of thousands of social media followers and posts of construction problems, including shoddy roofs, has drawn a complaint with regulators from a homebuilder.
Taylor Morrison filed a complaint against Cy Porter of CyFy Home Inspections, alleging he misrepresents problems, creates fear-mongering with buyers, conceals facts and cyberbullies people.
Porter often posts videos of things he identifies as construction problems, including cracked wood, incorrectly mounted lights and badly installed showers.
Porter’s social media also shows what he describes as a construction worker taking equipment from a job site and workers removing home inspection marking tape without fixing the problem that was marked.
Porter focuses on new home construction and works primarily with homebuyers.
Porter said he would not comment on the Taylor Morrison complaint until after the State Board of Technical Registration finishes its investigation. That Arizona agency regulates home inspectors.
The complaint alleges that Porter concealed material facts and violated American Society of Home Inspectors policies.
Orlene Loera, investigations manager for the Arizona Board of Technical Registration, said investigations were confidential until settled. In addition to home inspectors, the state agency regulates engineers, architects, geologists, land surveyors and landscape architects.
Porter said he believes it could take four to six months for the agency to set a hearing date for him.
Taylor Morrison said in a statement to The Arizona Republic that its “commitment to quality and care ensures home shoppers and buyers have confidence in our home building process.”
Taylor Morrison, the statement said, has long had a policy of allowing buyers to use third-party inspectors.
“We expect all home inspectors to be licensed and comply with standards of professional conduct and integrity,” the statement said.
The complaint also alleges Porter accepts free equipment for his business in exchange for endorsing it and intentionally tags his videos to reach a national audience.
