LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man faces an attempted murder charge after police said he shot another man in the chest “for no reason,” according to police documents.

On July 2 at around 7:30 p.m., officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 4500 block of West Flamingo Road, near South Decatur Boulevard, after a report of a shooting.

Details of the report were that the victim was shot by an unknown man who left the scene after the shooting, according to an arrest report.

Arriving officers found the victim, a man who was either 39 or 40, suffering from a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. Medical personnel took the man to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Because of his injuries and pain medication, police were not able to immediately interview the victim.

Police spoke to a witness at the scene who told police she was behind a business when she heard a gunshot and saw three people walk shortly after. One of the men told her not to look at him while he adjusted his back pocket.

The witness told police she believed he was possibly putting a gun away, the report stated. When she looked around the building, she saw the victim and ran over to help him.

Another witness told police he was standing in the street when he saw a man he recognized walk up to the victim and shoot him in the chest “for no reason” from a few feet away, according to the report.

The witness knew the suspect only by a nickname but was able to identify the vehicle the suspect drove. Using that information, police were able to identify the suspect as Nicholas Brennan, 37.

The witness later positively identified Brennan as the suspect in the shooting, police said.

Through investigation, police located Brennan in the 4500 block of Boulder Highway and took him into custody on July 21.

While talking to police, Brennan denied his involvement in a shooting before police told him any details of the incident, the report stated. He was adamant he was not involved, even though he was not given any information about the shooting except for the location.

When asked why someone would say it was him that shot someone, Brennan told police it was because “he’s hated,” according to the report.

Police took Brennan to the Clark County Detention Center where he was being held without bail. He faces a charge of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. His next court appearance was scheduled for July 24.
