August brings finding the perfect pen while back-to-school shopping, meeting new teachers, making new friends and, for some students, attending their first day of school in a new unfamiliar place.

Superintendents at multiple school districts shared their excitement for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year, which will begin in mid-August.

With the first day of school just around the corner, here’s when each of the five school districts in Shawnee County will will start.

  • For first grade through seventh grade, ninth grade and new-to-the-district high school students, the first day of school is Aug. 13.

  • For returning students in eighth grade and 10th through 12th grade, the first day will be Aug. 14.

  • For preschool and kindergarteners, the first day of school will be Aug. 15.

“Summer has been busy with camps, driver’s ed, summer school, professional learning and gearing up for the next school year,” superintendent Brad Willson said. “We are so excited to welcome back our families, and we are looking forward to a great year together.”

  • Half of the kindergarteners will have their first day on Aug. 14 and the other half will be on Aug. 15. Parents will be informed by their children’s schools which first day their child will start, according to the district calendar.

  • For students in first grade through 10th grade, the first day will be Aug. 14.

  • Students 11th grade and 12th grade will have their first day on Aug. 15.

“Shawnee Heights USD 450 is excited to welcome students, staff and families back for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year,” communications director Tiffanie Kinsch said in a written statement. “With the first day of classes set for August 13, our district is diligently preparing to ensure a smooth and successful start. We look forward to a year filled with learning, growth and community engagement. Let’s make this school year our best one yet.”

“I’m delighted to share that USD 372 Silver Lake is eagerly anticipating the start of school on Wednesday, August 14th,” district superintendent Brad Womack said in a written statement. “We’re embarking on exciting facility improvements and are enthusiastic about supporting our students’ growth opportunities. The 2024-2025 academic year will be a great time to be an Eagle.”

“We are so excited for the outstanding year ahead,” general director of instructional services Aarion Gray said in a written statement. “School starts back on August 12 and 13 and we will kick off the year with our superintendent leading our academic pep rally, cheering on our teachers at our 8th annual August 6 Convocation held at Lee Arena where our district officials, school board, cheerleaders, band members, and parents will help us welcome back over 2,000 staff members as they return.

“Dr. Anderson extends a special thank you to Dr. Mazachek, president of Washburn University for helping us welcome our staff back through the use of their facility.”

  • For students in kindergarten, sixth and ninth grade, the first day will be Aug. 12.

  • Students at Hope Street, Capital City and Avondale will start Aug. 12.

  • The rest of the students will start Aug. 13.
