Abhay Deol has sparked a conversation about sexuality and gender roles with his unconventional views. In a recent interview, the Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara star expressed his rejection of Western methods of categorizing sexuality, arguing that they are restrictive and fail to encompass the complexity of human experience.
Abhay Deol challenges conventional notions of sexuality: “I have embraced all experiences in my life”
Deol posits that sexuality is a spectrum, rather than a fixed identity. He believes that labels are primarily for the convenience of others, allowing them to neatly categorize individuals. This approach, he contends, ignores the fluidity and diversity of human experience. Instead, he advocates for a more holistic Eastern perspective that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of sexuality and identity.
“The Eastern approach is so different; it recognises the whole of us. I don’t define my sexuality, and this might sound controversial but for me, it’s not something that I think can be defined. I think it’s more for the other person’s comfort, so that they can put you in a box, neatly slot you. Why should I define myself in Western terms? I have embraced all experiences in my life and I continue to do so. I don’t know how to label that, I don’t want to label that. All of us have a masculine and feminine within us, so in my opinion, we are all they/them,” Deol said in an interview with Dirty Magazine.
Deol’s refusal to define his own sexuality is a bold statement against societal expectations. He suggests that such labels are limiting and unnecessary, and that individuals should be free to explore their desires and experiences without conforming to predetermined categories. “But there is a sense of taking charge and leading. Having said that I would happily give it up to a woman too if she wanted to take charge and lead, that’s also part of my masculinity.”
The actor’s views on masculinity are equally unconventional. He defines masculinity not by aggression or dominance, but by the ability to create a safe and inclusive environment for others. He added, “It’s very easy to be provocative through violence and sex, it’s much harder to be provocative through silence. How the f**k do I provoke you by not saying anything? That’s what interests me.”
Abhay Deol will next star in Bun Tikki alongside Zeenat Aman and Shabana Azmi.
