Renowned lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has expressed his disapproval of the portrayal of the “angry young man” character in the recent film Animal. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has been the subject of much debate for its controversial scenes.

Akhtar, who, along with his collaborator Salim Khan, is credited with introducing the “angry young man” archetype in Hindi cinema with films like Zanjeer, believes that the character has been distorted in recent times. He criticised the trend of depicting the male protagonist as a domineering and aggressive figure, citing a particular scene in Animal where the female lead is asked to lick the male protagonist’s shoe.
In a recent interview with We Are Yuvaa, Javed said, “In the south also, he (the hero) is turning into a caricature. Now he is the kind of man who wants a woman to lick his shoe. He is already starting to turn into a caricature of an angry young man or a strong man.” Later, the interviewer asked him if he had watched the film. The lyricist said, “No, thank god.”
The lyricist further spoke about the difference between the “angry young man” characters he and Salim Khan created and the ones portrayed in contemporary cinema. While the former were deeply rooted in social and economic realities, the latter seem to be mere caricatures driven by toxic masculinity.
Javed Akhtar also highlighted the importance of strong female characters in his and Salim Khan’s films, stating that women were portrayed as independent and opinionated individuals.
