“The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert noted that Donald Trump’s selection of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate hasn’t worked out very well so far.
Vance is the least liked non-incumbent nominee at this point in the race since 1980, and is already making headlines for awkward campaign appearances such as his stilted joke about “racist” Diet Mountain Dew.
When few people laughed, Vance laughed at his joke himself and told the audience: “I love you guys.”
“You sound like a groom who invited only co-workers to his bachelor party,” Colbert cracked.
Since Vance doesn’t put any new states into play and doesn’t help Trump with any key voter groups, Colbert wondered why he was picked for the role ― then played footage of Trump giving a “very Trump answer” when asked about Vance on Fox News.
“He liked me maybe more than anybody liked me,” Trump said.
“Really?” said Colbert in mock disbelief. “Really? Vance likes Trump more than anybody else? Is that true?”
Colbert rolled in a clip of Melania Trump with an answer.
“Yes, of course” the former first lady said.
“Makes sense,” Colbert told his audience. “That’s verified.”
