In a sensational case of duping a goldsmith with fake gold ornaments worth more than Rs 5 crore, Kolkata Police arrested one Bangladeshi national along with two other Indian nationals and recovered the original gold. The case was cracked by the Shakespeare Sarani police station, which comes under the South Division of Kolkata Police.
An individual named Mithu and his associates conspired to deceive Amal Roy, a goldsmith, into providing gold ornaments. They promised to exchange the ornaments for gold bars. Trusting them, Roy handed over various gold ornaments weighing 7 kg (805 gm) worth Rs. 5,20,00,000 (five crore twenty lakh). However, Mithu and the others gave Roy fake gold bars in return, thus cheating him out of the gold ornaments. This incident took place on July 17, 2024, at the Niharika Hotel near Minto Park in Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata.
A case was registered at the Shakespeare Sarani police station.
During the investigation, the police visited the crime scene and carefully reviewed the CCTV footage. One person was identified as Mithu, a resident of Bangladesh. Mithu tricked the goldsmith and took the gold ornaments from the hotel. It was also found that an associate of Mithu was waiting outside the hotel. When Mithu left, his associate joined him, and they escaped with the gold ornaments. This associate was identified as Jitan Pal, a goldsmith from the Bowbazar area.
Acting on reliable information, a team from Shakespeare Sarani Police Station conducted a raid in the Muchipara Police Station area and arrested Jitan Pal in front of his residence. Following his statement, other members of the group, Uttam Pal and Goutam Chandra Saha (a Bangladeshi citizen), were also arrested in the Muchipara area. Based on Jitan Pal’s statement and his guidance, the police went to Ramesh Behera’s residence in Muchipara. After searching the residence, they recovered and seized 7 kg (684 gm) of gold ornaments valued at approximately Rs. 5,22,00,000 (five crore twenty-two lakh), following all legal procedures.
