GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The May 15 North Avenue shooting that left two dead will now be investigated by the 21st Judicial District Grand Jury.
The grand jury agreed to investigate the incident on Thursday, District Attorney Dan Rubinstein said in a press release. The incident was previously under investigation by the Grand Junction Police Department.
Rubinstein stated in the release that by law, grand jury proceedings are secret “to ensure fairness and protect the integrity of the investigation,” but the purpose of the investigation is not.
“Given the heightened public interest and seriousness of this incident, and in order to assure decisions are made with the best possible information and input, District Attorney Dan Rubinstein and Grand Junction Police Chief Matt Smith believed it was appropriate to ask the grand jury to investigate this matter,” the release read.
