Ranbir Kapoor recently delved deep into his relationship with his wife Alia Bhatt, tracing their journey. In a candid conversation on the podcast with entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, the actor painted a heartwarming picture of their bond, revealing the nuances of their love story and the challenges they have overcome together.

Their paths first crossed when Alia was just nine and Ranbir was twenty, during a photoshoot for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s unmade film, Balika Vadhu. “I still have that photoshoot with me. I have met Alia over the years and I knew that this person was special. I have immense respect for her as an actor, artiste, person, daughter and sister,” the actor said, calling the experience, “weird and funny”.
Alia’s admiration for Ranbir grew over the years, and her candid confessions about her crush on him became a frequent topic of media speculation. Fate intervened when the duo reunited on the sets of Brahmastra. A spark ignited, and they embarked on a love story that culminated in marriage in 2022. Their relationship blossomed amidst the challenges of their respective careers, and they welcomed their daughter Raha Kapoor in the following year.
Describing Alia as his best friend, Ranbir emphasized the ease and comfort they share. “Watching movies together, laughing, chatting… that’s what romance is,” the Animal actor explained. “I am lucky to have married someone who I am extremely close to as a friend. We can really chat, laugh, bi**h… like she (Alia) is my best friend. I got really lucky with that. Alia is really a wonderful person, somebody who can really… She’s very colourful. She is 11 years younger than me. It is very funny,” he added.
Ranbir expressed immense admiration for Alia’s talent, ambition, and intelligence. He acknowledged the challenges of capturing her attention, given her multifaceted personality. “I love going on holidays with her but I love coming home with her,” he shared. “She’s a very ambitious girl and an overachiever. She is extremely passionate about her work and extremely intelligent,” said Ranbir, and also said that there were times when she used to be so “fragmented”.
“You really have to get her attention but over the years, after cribbing, I have got her attention now. She has really made an effort and I must acknowledge that everything that I complained about and she complained about, but I think she has made better efforts than I have,” he said.
Ranbir Kapoor also said that Alia Bhatt has made a lot of effort in their marriage. “She used to speak in a very loud tone. I think my father’s (Rishi Kapoor) tone, growing up, always rattled me. So she really made efforts to change that. And that’s not easy when you’ve lived 30 years of your life speaking in a certain way. She’s someone who instinctively reacts to say, if Raha falls down. There’s a reaction that throws me off. She makes certain things to put me at ease. I hope I could say there’s something I did to put her at ease, but I don’t think I’ve done it yet,” he revealed in the interview.
Ranbir’s reflections on their marriage highlighted the importance of compromise and mutual adjustment. “You have to let go of your personality. She’s let go of her personality,” he stated. “We’re adjusting to each other to make it livable for each other. Any marriage is doing that. You have to let go, you have to adjust, you have to sacrifice facets of it. It’s impossible for two people to like each other the way they are.”
Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt got married in April 2022 and welcomed their first child in November of the same year.
On the work front, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt will reunite after Brahmastra in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love & War. While she is awaiting the release of Jigra, Ranbir is set for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana.
