A road construction project is closing down Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s main gate for a full week beginning Monday. The gate, located in DuPont, will reopen at 5 a.m. Aug. 5.
Military and civilian personnel and visitors will need to use other gates, according to the state Department of Transportation and the Army.
The shutdown begins 5 a.m. July 29.
It’s part of the I-5 Mounts Road to Steilacoom-DuPont Road Corridor Improvements project that is intended to relieve chronic traffic congestion on I-5 near JBLM. WSDOT is rebuilding the Steilacoom-DuPont Road (Exit 119) interchange and extending I-5 HOV lanes to Mounts Road.
When the the $233 million project is finished in 2026, access to and from JBLM will be easier, WSDOT said.
Travelers to and from JBLM will want to plan additional travel time, according to WSDOT.
Full information about gate times and location can be found on the Army’s website. During the closure, the Liberty, Lewis North and Madigan gates will be open 24 hours a day. Integrity Gate will be open 5 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. on weekends.
