A leader of the Trinamool Congress was on Saturday detained on charges of assaulting a woman in West Bengal’s Kalna.
The action against the Trinamool leader, identified as the party’s General Secretary Gopal Tewari, was taken following a complaint by the woman and based on a viral video.
According to the police, the woman accused the Trinamool leader of barging into her house and thrashing her up over a land dispute. She also alleged her daughter and mother-in-law were beaten up by the accused.
Commenting on the incident, the police said a controversy broke out over a piece of land.
It was alleged that a wall near the woman’s house was fenced by Tewari. A scuffle broke out between the two, after which the woman and her family were allegedly attacked.
Talking to reporters, the woman said, “The Trinamool leader bricked a piece of land next to our house. As the issue escalated, the accused and his gang beat my mother-in-law.”
“They returned and thrashed other members of my family. I was slapped,” the woman alleged, adding that at least 50 people had barged into her house.
