MUMBAI: A 50-year-old American woman has been found chained to a tree in a forest in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district, and a set of documents, including an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address and a photocopy of her US passport, were recovered from her, a police official said on Monday.
A shepherd in Sonurli village, about 450km from Mumbai, found the woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, on Saturday and alerted police.
Cops suspect Lalita’s husband tied her to the tree and fled. She appeared frail and prescriptions for mental health issues were found in her possession. She had been staying in Tamil Nadu, from where her husband hails, for the last 10 years, an official said, adding that her visa had expired.
“She is not in a position to give her statement. She is weak as she had not eaten for a couple of days. Besides, the area where she was found had experienced heavy rain. We don’t know for how long she was tied to that tree,” a police official said. A case is yet to be registered, said Saurabh Agrawal, superintendent of police, Sindhudurg district.
“The woman was initially rushed to hospital in Sawantwadi and later shifted to Goa Medical College Hospital considering her mental and health condition. She is now out of danger,” an official said.
