Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, was all set to release on July 5. Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that it has been postponed and also that it’ll be released on August 2. The decision was taken due to the strong performance of Kalki 2898 AD, which was released a week earlier, on June 28. With few days left for the film to release, the trade experts expect the musical thriller to have a slow start at the box office. But there’s hope that it’ll pick up if word of mouth is strong.
Trade experts believe that Ajay Devgn-Tabu starrer Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha will open better than Akshay Kumar-starrer Sarfira
A trade expert said on the condition of anonymity, “After the film got postponed, the film wasn’t promoted much for the first 10 days. Though the makers released the songs, the film failed to make much noise. It is expected to open in the range of Akshay Kumar’s recent release Sarfira – around Rs. 2.50 crores.”
The rest of the trade analysts, however, didn’t agree with this opening-day prediction. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “The opening will be higher than Sarfira – around 4-4.50 crores.” He, however, confessed, “There’s hardly any buzz actually for the film. But I have tremendous faith in this combination of Neeraj Pandey, Ajay Devgn and Tabu. So, I hope it surprises and the word of mouth really take it forward.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan remarked, “Ajay Devgn is the only actor who, after the lockdown, has given a Rs. 200 crore grosser in the form of Drishyam 2 (2022) and Rs. 150 crore grosser with Shaitaan (2023). Neeraj Pandey has also made some fine films in the past.”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal also confirmed, “100% it’ll open more than Sarfira. If the film is good, then definitely it’ll see a jump on day 2. I have confidence in its director and lead actor.”
On the jump, Taran Adarsh cautioned, “It has to be a huge jump. It can’t be a normal weekend jump.” This is crucial as reports state that Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is an expensive film. Taran Adarsh continued, “Also, Ajay Devgn’s price is on the higher side.”
A positive for Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha is that it is expected to open better than its competition, Ulajh, starring Janhvi Kapoor as per the trade. Atul Mohan explains, “This is because Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha has a bigger actor. Hence, it’ll get better showcasing.”
Taran Adarsh said, “At the moment, both are on the lower side. Both films star known names like Janhvi Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Tabu etc. Even in the case of Ulajh, the director is very good. But the numbers have to come. Everything boils down to that factor. Taarif se pet nahin bharta. Taarif is good for your self-esteem. But you need numbers on your side at the end of the day.”
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi had the last word as he said, “Having Ajay Devgn, Neeraj Pandey and Tabu in a film is akin to earning an ISO mark. Definitely, the marketing could have been a lot better. But I also truly feel that nothing markets like the content itself and hence, I am hoping that the film manages to strike a chord and pull the audience to the theatres.”
