Saira Banu’s heartfelt tribute captured the essence of Rafi’s musical prowess and the special bond he shared with her late husband, the legendary actor Dilip Kumar. In her Instagram post, she reflected, “One of the greatest playback singers, Mohd Rafi Sahab, is considered a genius when it comes to varied styles of songs. This great singer had an exquisite blend of melody, emotion, and energy, which always resulted in thousands of soulful songs.”

Quoting Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu continued, “There have been a number of highly talented playback singers, but with Rafi Bhai, it has been a mystical bonding as though he was part of me, practically my own voice, and a humble, unpretentious figure. Rafi Bhai had the God-given ability to mould and adapt his rendering of a number according to the given situation in the film, the characters, the mood of the time, and the overall nature of the character in the film.”
Memories of Collaboration
Reflecting on the collaborative magic between Dilip Kumar and Mohammed Rafi, Saira Banu reminisced about their work on the iconic song “Madhuban Mein Radhika Naache Rey” from the classic film “KOHINOOR”. She recalled Dilip Kumar’s dedication, sharing that he practiced for months to master the sitar for the song, highlighting the depth of their artistic synergy.
A Touching Anecdote
One poignant anecdote highlighted by Saira Banu dates back to 1962, underscoring Rafi’s dedication to his craft. During a performance for Border Security Force Jawans at the Indo-China border, Rafi developed a severe throat infection, jeopardizing the event. “Rafi Bhai was in tears and inconsolable at the thought of letting down the eager Jawans who were sending him little notes of requests,” Saira Banu recalled.
A Lifesaving Remedy
In a moment of crisis, Dilip Kumar came to Rafi’s aid with a traditional remedy of ginger and honey, passed down from his mother. “Rafi Bhai gulped it down obediently, and lo and behold! It worked wonders for him,” described Saira Banu. The remedy proved to be a miracle cure, restoring Rafi’s voice overnight and allowing him to perform, much to the joy of the Jawans and all present.
