Respected indigenous leader, campaigner and lawyer Noel Pearson has joined the board of Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue.
The iron ore billionaire told investors on Thursday that Mr Pearson’s appointment as a non-executive director would bring “enormous benefit and insight” to the board.
Mr Pearson has been a vocal advocate on social issues affecting Aboriginal people and was among the leading campaigners for the ‘yes’ vote in last year’s Voice to Parliament referendum.
He is the founder of the Cape York Partnership, an organisation promoting the economic and social development of Cape York in northern Queensland, the founder of Good to Great Schools Australia, which aims to lift education outcomes for all students, and the Cape York Land Council.
“I am honoured to be a member of the Fortescue board and I look forward to making a contribution to this diverse, progressive and successful business,” Mr Peasron said.
“Fortescue is a proud Australian company that is led by its values from mine site to the boardroom — something I have great respect for.”
Mr Forrest said he had developed an admiration and respect for Mr Pearson over nearly 20 years of friendship.
