Director Nikkhil Advani’s career trajectory is a fascinating tale of industry ups and downs. Having started his journey with the prestigious Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions, he made his mark with the iconic Kal Ho Naa Ho. However, a subsequent fallout with producer Karan Johar led to a tumultuous phase in his career.

In a chat with Galatta Plus, Nikkhil said, “Salaam-e-Ishq was an outcome of arrogance that, ‘Okay, people feel that I have not directed Kal Ho Naa Ho, I’ll direct six love stories. One will be a Mani Ratnam-type love story, one will be a Gulzar type, one will be Karan Johar type, one will be a Kundan Shah type’. So, I said I will direct six love stories. Sunil Manchanda (producer) gave me the option. He said, ‘Let’s make something like Love Actually.”
Salman Khan’s Timely Intervention
During this challenging period, Salman Khan stepped in as a guiding light, offering Nikkhil his unwavering support. As Nikkhil recounts, “Salman Khan prides himself on being the messiah of the industry, so the minute I walked out of the doors of Dharma Productions, I got a call from Salman saying, ‘Come and meet me’. (He then said) ‘Now you will work for me, you will make a film for me’. And I appreciate that.” This act of kindness led to Nikkhil directing Hero starring Salman Khan’s protégé, Sooraj Pancholi.
The Aftermath: A Rollercoaster Ride
While the support from Salman Khan was a significant boost, Nikkhil’s subsequent films, Salaam-e-Ishq and Hero, faced box office setbacks. Despite these challenges, Nikkhil’s resilience shone through as he collaborated with Akshay Kumar on Chandni Chowk to China and Patiala House.
Currently, Nikkhil is gearing up for the release of Vedaa, featuring John Abraham and Sharvari. Additionally, his web series Freedom at Midnight is slated to premiere on SonyLIV.
