Dear Aunty,
Do you think it is acceptable to say no to a funeral invitation because the level of emotion on display might give away that I was closer to the deceased than anyone knew? Many years ago we had a secret love affair that no one knew about, even though we have many mutual friends. Circumstances put an end to the dalliance but I always held him in warm regard and hoped that maybe one day we could rekindle our relationship. He recently died unexpectedly and while I would love to go and show my respects, I am afraid people will think my out-of-control bawling is inappropriate given they will have considered us only casual acquaintances. What should I do?
