Kevin Walters hits back at reporter’s question at press conference, Brisbane Broncos, can they make the eight, rugby league news – MASHAHER

Broncos coach Kevin Walters has snapped at a reporter in a tense exchange over his future at Red Hill.

The Broncos are just clinging on in the finals race but will likely need to win out for the rest of the season just to make the eight after suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs at Suncorp last round.

It’s a stunning decline for side that came within minute of winning the grand final in 2023.

Walters faced the media on Friday ahead of their must-win clash against the Titans this weekend and was in no mood to discuss his future.

“As healthy and energetic (as I could be),” the Broncos coach said when asked how he was feeling amid the underwhelming season.

“I love working with these guys. Give me a jersey and I’ll run out.”

Walters was then asked if he was the right man for the job given Brisbane’s poor form just a season after they reached the grand final and what his response to the critics were.

“I’m not even going to answer that. It’s ridiculous,” Walters said.

“Who’s been critical? They haven’t been in here and seeing what we’re doing. That’s a silly question.”

During the week on NRL360, Broncos great called upon Walters and the club to change captaincy from Adam Reynolds to Pat Carrigan.

“I think the team is lacking leadership. I watch them closely… on Saturday somebody needed to stand up and put a stake in the ground,” Tallis said.

“(Reynolds) didn’t do it, and in the grand final he didn’t get them home either. If he’s the captain and he’s not doing it, there might be a chance to put Pat Carrigan there.

Walters was asked if he was disappointed by Tallis’ comments.

“It’s not going to happen. He’s our captain and as long as he’s still playing, he’ll remain our captain,” Walters said.

“I don’t read any of that stuff, so I don’t want to make a comment on it.

“We have to play the Titans tomorrow night. I’m very confident in our boys and our players to respond well.”
