Netflix today released Modern Masters: S S Rajamouli, a 73-minute-long documentary on one of the greatest filmmakers of not just India but the world. It comprises bytes of S S Rajamouli as well as that of his actors, family members, etc. talking about his life, habits, films, etc. A major chunk of the documentary is on the Baahubali film series that made Rajamouli the blockbuster Pan-India director. Though it was one of the biggest hits ever, before the release, the makers went to insane lengths to save money as they were not sure if the expensive two-part film would reap dividends.
Modern Masters: Prabhas reveals that to reduce Baahubali’s budget, S S Rajamouli stayed in a cheap hotel with dirty bathrooms; non-veg food was not served on the sets
Producer Shobu Yarlagadda revealed, “We heard the story and we realized that it’s lengthy. It doesn’t fit into one film. And secondly, the budgets are going to be pretty big.”
He continued, “90 or 95% of what was spent on the film went into the production. We all travelled economy when we had to shoot the episodes in Mahabaleshwar. Rajamouli and all of us – the entire unit – stayed in one lodge.”
An incident narrated by Baahubali’s lead actor Prabhas is astonishing. He confessed, “In Mahabaleshwar, we were put up in a nice hotel. All the actors were accommodated there. But S S Rajamouli was staying somewhere else. I asked him, ‘Why are you staying there? This is nice’. He replied, ‘No, no, no. I want to save the budget’.”
Prabhas further said, “He stayed in some stupid, stupidest hotel. There was no clean bathroom and all. I have never met someone like that. He’s a mad person (smiles)!”
Shobu continued, “The set had all-vegetarian food. There was no non-veg served, which was not the norm at that time. We didn’t want some X people or the top ten people having non-veg food and the rest of them being deprived of it. Definitely, we cut a lot of corners.”
