Netflix today released Modern Masters: S S Rajamouli, a 73-minute-long documentary on one of the greatest filmmakers of not just India but the world. It comprises bytes of S S Rajamouli as well as that of his actors, family members etc talking about his life, habits, films etc. A major chunk of the documentary is on the Baahubali film series that made Rajamouli the blockbuster Pan-India director.

S S Rajamouli’s father K Vijayendra Prasad said, “One day, he (Rajamouli) approached me, ‘Father, I have decided to make a movie with Prabhas. It’ll be a period movie. I don’t want any supernatural things in this film. And I want some grey characters’.”
This is followed by Rana Daggubati adding, “The producer, Shobu Yarlagadda, came and just told me that it’s a period war-based kind of film and that they were looking at me playing the antagonist. I replied that I’d love to have a narration. I also asked him, ‘Who’s the actor you went to before you came to me?’. He said, ‘We tried to reach Jason Momoa from Game Of Thrones‘! I said, ‘Okay, that’s a good second number’!” Jason later also became famous for his role of Aquaman.
While Rana Daggubati ended up playing the antagonist, Bhallaladeva, Prabhas played the protagonist, Amarendra Baahubali and his son Mahendra Baahubali aka Shiva. Baahubali – The Beginning (2015) shows Shiva living in a remote village, unaware of his lineage and his great father. Thanks to his love interest Avantika (Tamannaah Bhatia), he discovers the kingdom of Mahishmati and its evil king, Bhallaladeva. Soon, he learns that his father Amarendra Baahubali was the ruler of Mahishmati before Bhallaladeva replaced him and then even killed him. His mother Devasena (Anushka Shetty) has been kept captive by the king. How Mahendra Baahubali attacks Bhallaladeva, defeats him and becomes the rightful ruler of Mahishmati forms the climax of Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion (2017).
