Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has launched a scathing critique of the Indian film industry, accusing its directors of underestimating the intelligence of their audience. In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Varma drew a stark contrast between the cinematic landscape in India and Hollywood, asserting that Indian filmmakers often treat viewers as ‘dumb.’

Ram Gopal Varma pointed to the stark difference in output when comparing the best of both worlds. He said, “When you talk about Scorsese, or when you talk about Clint Eastwood, the kind of realism and effectiveness… They’re taking up (interesting) subjects, and getting performances that are top-notch. More than anything else, it is their personal attitude which is reflected in their films.”

As an example of the disparity, Varma contrasted the Hollywood epic Oppenheimer with the Indian film Thugs of Hindostan. The former, a collaboration of top-tier talent, has been lauded for its intellectual depth and cinematic brilliance. The latter, despite boasting a star-studded cast including Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, was a commercial and critical failure. “Imagine what is the benchmark here. All the big (Hollywood) stars come together and make Oppenheimer. And here, all the big stars come together, and they make Thugs of Hindostan,” Varma stated bluntly.

However, Varma was quick to acknowledge exceptions to the rule. He praised Aamir Khan for his versatility, noting the actor’s ability to cater to diverse audiences with films like Ghajini and Taare Zameen Par. Additionally, he singled out Sandeep Reddy Vanga for his audacity in exploring unconventional narratives with films like Kabir Singh and Animal.

Ram Gopal Varma had worked with Aamir Khan in 1995 superhit Rangeela.
