Skin issues, acne, flare-ups: Your gut decides what your skin looks like – MASHAHER

Have you ever wondered why your skin doesn’t care despite doing so much skincare? It might not be about what’s happening on the outside or the beauty regimen you’re following. Instead, it could be related to what’s going on inside your body, particularly in your gut.

Your gut, including your stomach, intestines, and colon, is crucial for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It also plays a significant role in your overall health.

Interestingly, there is a strong connection between your gut health and your skin’s condition.

When your gut isn’t functioning optimally, it can impact your skin’s appearance and health.

India Today spoke to several experts to learn more about this gut-skin connection.

What’s the connection?

“Gut health and skin health are closely interconnected through the gut-skin axis. This bi-directional relationship means that the state of the gut can influence skin health, and vice versa,” Dr Shubham Prasad, consultant, gastroenterology and hepatobiliary sciences, Fortis Escorts, Delhi, tells us.

The doctor adds that the gut microbiome, a complex community of microorganisms in the digestive tract, plays a crucial role in maintaining systemic inflammation and immune function.

If there is an imbalance in the gut microbiota, it can lead to increased systemic inflammation, which may cause skin issues.

Further, Dr Prasad Bhate, HoD and consultant, Medical Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, Pune, explains, “The group of bacteria and other microorganisms that reside in the intestines is the main factor influencing the relationship between gut health and skin health. By maintaining healthy digestion, boosting the immune system, and impacting other physiological processes, such as skin health, these microbes are essential for preserving overall health.”

Dr Pawan Rawal, head unit, gastroenterology, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, agrees and says that the gut and skin, though seemingly distant, share a profound connection.

They are both considered barrier organs, constantly interacting with the external environment. The gut produces hormones and neurotransmitters that influence skin functions like oil production and inflammation.

It is also vital to understand the gut-brain-skin connection. The gut-brain axis influences stress levels and mood, which can affect skin health. Stress and mental health issues can exacerbate skin conditions, making a healthy gut crucial for overall well-being.

Can your skin spill the beans?

“Your skin can be a good indicator of what’s happening in your gut,” says Dr Rinky Kapoor, a Delhi-based dermatologist from The Esthetic Clinics.

If you have an unhealthy gut due to poor eating habits, it might be visible in the appearance of your skin. Serious skin issues like eczema flare-ups, hives, and dermatitis can worsen significantly.

An unhealthy gut can contribute to various skin problems, including:

  • Acne: Imbalances in gut bacteria can lead to increased inflammation, a key factor in acne development.
  • Eczema: Chronic inflammation linked to gut dysbiosis can exacerbate eczema symptoms.
  • Psoriasis: There is a correlation between gut health and psoriasis flare-ups.
  • Rosacea: Gut-related inflammation can contribute to the redness and flushing associated with rosacea.
  • Premature ageing: Chronic inflammation can accelerate skin ageing, leading to wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
  • Other skin issues: Digestive problems like bloating and constipation can indirectly affect skin health by depriving it of essential nutrients.

A healthy gut can significantly benefit the skin:

  • Reduced inflammation: A balanced gut microbiome helps reduce systemic inflammation, leading to clearer and healthier skin.
  • Clearer complexion: Reduced inflammation can lead to fewer breakouts and a more even skin tone.
  • Improved nutrient absorption: Optimal gut function ensures better absorption of skin-essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, D, and E, and minerals such as zinc.
  • Enhanced skin barrier function: A healthy gut supports the skin’s ability to retain moisture and defend against irritants and pathogens.

Improve your gut health for better skin

  • Diet: Focus on fibre-rich foods, fermented foods, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Limit processed foods, excessive sugar, and unhealthy fats.

  • Probiotics and prebiotics: Incorporate probiotic-rich foods or supplements to support gut bacteria. Prebiotics, a type of fibre that feeds beneficial bacteria, can also be beneficial.
  • Hydration: Drinking adequate water is essential for maintaining gut health and skin hydration.
  • Stress management: Practise stress-reducing techniques, as stress can negatively impact gut health.
  • Regular exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to promote a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Adequate sleep: Sleep is crucial for gut repair and regeneration. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine: Excessive consumption can irritate the gut lining and contribute to dehydration.
  • Consult healthcare providers: If you feel that your gut health isn’t optimal, don’t hesitate to seek expert advice.

Bottomline

The gut-skin connection highlights the deep relationship between your digestive health and the condition of your skin. By nurturing your gut, you can enhance both your skin’s appearance and your overall well-being.

A healthy gut not only benefits your skin but also serves as a valuable indicator of your internal health.

Improving your skin by caring for your gut isn’t difficult. Simply eat a balanced diet, incorporate probiotics and prebiotics, manage stress, and adopt other healthy lifestyle habits to benefit both your gut and your skin.
