Tamil Nadu: Teen student beaten to death by alleged drunk men while walking near banks of Cauvery – MASHAHER

A 17-year-old college student was beaten to death by a group of allegedly drunk men in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli when he and his cousin were walking near the banks of the river Cauvery, police said. Five people were arrested in connection with the incident.

The incident occurred on Friday when the victim, Ranjith Kannan, a first-year student from Thanthai Periyar College, decided to take a walk along the banks of the river with his cousin Hari Santosh.

Kannan had gone to his uncle’s residence after college and then proceeded to walk along the banks of the Cauvery with Santosh.

As Kannan and Santosh were walking near the banks, a group of men who were allegedly drunk picked up a quarrel with the duo. In the midst of the argument, the men beat up Kannan, hitting his head with a wooden log and punching him in the stomach, leaving him unconscious.

Santosh rushed Kannan to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Kannan belonged to Pudukottai, police said.

Later, the Srirangam Police arrested five accused, identified as Naveen Kumar, Vijay, Suluki Suresh, Mathan and Pragdeeswaran in connection with the incident.

A case was registered against the accused under sections 103 (2) (murder), 191 (2) (using force or resorting to violence), 296 (b) (using obscene words or gestures) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
