Milwaukee area beaches will be closed for swimming due to high waves and strong winds – MASHAHER

Beaches in Milwaukee and surrounding areas will be closed for swimming and small crafts such as kayaks from 9 p.m. Monday through late Tuesday due to expected life threatening waves of 4 to 6 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

A combination of high waves and onshore winds is expected to lead to unsafe swimming conditions. Affected areas include: Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha Counties. Bradford, McKinley, South Shore and South Shore Rocky beaches are all closed.

“Stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls. Strong structural and longshore currents are expected. Rip currents are possible,” the National Weather Service said on its website.

Meteorologist Cameron Miller said the high waves form from strong northeast winds blowing over Lake Michigan which draws large waves. Miller said this is not unusual for this time of year.

Beaches are expected to reopen Wednesday.
