Three-time World Champion and Rio Olympics gold medallist Carolina Marin has suffered another major setback as it was confirmed that she had suffered another anterior cruciate ligamanet injury, her team confirmed on August 6, Tuesday. Marin had a painful exit in Paris as she was forced to forfeit the semifinal against He Bing Jiao, mid-way through the second game.
Marin was left in tears after having landed her right foot awkwardly on the court. As soon as she touched the floor, she fell down and stayed there and burst out in tears, knowing well that her tournament was over. She put on a knee brace with the help of her medical staff and wept inconsolably. In a statement released by BWF, Marin’s team confirmed that she had injured the ACL on her right knee after tests conducted in Madrid on Monday.

The tests revealed that both her menisci were affected and further assessments will be conducted to determine her treatment plan.
“Carolina Marin has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of her right knee, her team has confirmed.”
“Marin, forced to retire from her Paris 2024 Olympic Games women’s singles semifinal against He Bing Jiao on Sunday, August 4 at Porte de la Chapelle Arena, had her diagnosis confirmed following a second round of tests carried out upon her return to Madrid on Monday.”
“The Rio 2016 gold medallist and three-time world champion was a game up and leading He 10-8 in the second when she collapsed clutching her right knee after reaching for a return. The tests also revealed that both her menisci were affected.”
“Further assessments will be conducted before a suitable treatment plan is determined. We wish Marin a speedy recovery,” read the statement.
Marin’s second ACL injury
This is the second ACL injury that Marin has suffered in her career. The Spanish star was forced to miss the Tokyo Olympics due to an ACL injury on her left knee and had to undergo surgery. The recovery schedule meant that the Spaniard was unable to defend her crown in Tokyo.
China’s He Bing Jiao paid a lovely tribute to Marin after her silver medal win as she held a small ‘Spain’ pin in her right hand when she took the podium.
