Erie Catholic Bishop Lawrence T. Persico remained hospitalized Monday after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery last week.

Persico, 73, was taken to a hospital emergency department on Thursday. He was admitted and had surgery later that evening, according to a statement from the Catholic Diocese of Erie. Diocesan officials did not identify the hospital.

“He is now undergoing a series of evaluations to determine an effective treatment plan,” officials said in the statement.

The diocese provided no other details about Persico’s condition, the type of surgery he underwent or the treatment plan being discussed. Patient privacy laws prevent hospital officials from disclosing those details.

Can people visit Bishop Persico in the hospital?

Arrangements are being made to ensure Persico’s public responsibilities are covered by other personnel in the coming weeks.

“While he is not receiving visitors, he is grateful for the many prayers being offered,” diocesan officials said in the statement.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Persico as the Erie Catholic Diocese’s bishop July 31, 2012. He was ordained and installed on Oct. 1, 2012.
