VIRGINIA (DC News Now) — A man from Virginia was arrested last week for making thousands of threats toward the President, Vice President and other public officials, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said Monday.

Frank Lucio Carillo, 66, of Winchester, was charged after making “thousands of posts and replies in online forums” threatening violence toward top U.S. officials.

According to court documents, the FBI was notified on July 27 of potential threats being made on the social media platform “GETTR” by someone with the username “joemadarats1.”

The FBI found over 4,000 posts and replies made by the user targeting public officials, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Vice President Harris was specifically mentioned 19 times by joemadarats1, including several threats of violence. In a February post, he said he had his “AR-15 LOCKED AND LOADED,” according to the DOJ.

Authorities eventually linked the GETTR subscriber information to match joemadarats1 with Carillo, mapping his physical location in Winchester, Va.

“Open political discourse is a cornerstone of our American experience,” said U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh for the Western District of Virginia in a news release. “We can disagree. We can argue and we can debate. However, when those disagreements cross the line to threats of violence, law enforcement must step in.”

On Aug. 2, authorities searched Carillo’s home and found a 9 mm pistol, an AR-15 rifle and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

On Aug. 5, Carillo made his initial court appearance and was charged with one count of making threats against the Vice President of the United States.

The FBI Richmond Field Office, FBI Phoenix Field Office – which first identified the threats – and the U.S. Secret Service are investigating the case further.
