Australia hockey player Tom Craig has been released from a Paris prison with just a warning after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to buy cocaine from a dealer.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Craig received no fine, nor criminal conviction, after an incident in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.

He spoke to media after his release, apologising for what he called a “terrible mistake”, adding he had “embarrassed you all”.

“I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions,” Craig told a group of international reporters.

“My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport and the Australian Olympic team.

“I’ve embarrassed you all. I’m truly sorry.”

Both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras were eliminated from the quarterfinals earlier this week.

A report from News Corp claims Australian hockey players had a team function in Paris on Tuesday night, which wrapped up at around 8.45pm.

Paris police earlier confirmed to Nine two arrests had been made afterwards.

“Police officers who witnessed a cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement, on the night of August 6 to 7, arrested the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia and who is said to be a member of the Australian field hockey team,” a spokesman said.

“With regard to the quantities of narcotics seized from the seller, the investigations have been entrusted to the Narcotics Squad.”

Craig was revealed to be one of the arrests, while a dealer allegedly holding 75 ecstasy pills and seven vials of cocaine was reportedly arrested.

Public broadcaster FrancInfo reported that Craig allegedly was in possession of one gram of cocaine.
