Here’s how much rain is expected – MASHAHER

Tropical Storm Debby has rocked South Carolina’s coastline with heavy rainfall and flooding.

This leaves those who live outside of the area wondering what the storm will bring their way.

Greenville is still on track to experience the effects of Debby, with the weakened storm heading into the area Thursday morning. The National Weather Service at GSP has confirmed rainfall for the area. So how much can residents expect?

Here’s what to know about Debby as it ascends into the Upstate.

How much rainfall will Greenville-Spartanburg get?

The total rainfall amount for Greenville will be less than an inch, according to Doug Outlaw with the NWS at GSP.

“We’re not really expecting any problems for Greenville. Areas west of Greenville, there’s hardly any rain,” Outlaw said. “Clemson, not even a quarter of an inch.”

Thursday’s rainstorm is forecast to be heavy due to the tropical nature of the storm, but brief. The chance for thunderstorms is low.

Going east into the Gaffney area, 1.5 inches of rain have been recorded.

Areas around Interstate 77 of ‘concern’ during Debby

Areas near Interstate 77, like Rock Hill, are of concern for when Debby arrives, where 4 inches of rain are expected to accumulate. This may cause flooding or runoff east of I-77. Rainfall amounts may rapidly increase east of Gaffney going toward Charlotte, North Carolina. The Asheville, North Carolina, area is projected to receive only a half an inch of rain.

When will Debby move out of the Upstate area?

Debby was initially forecast to move out of the Upstate around Saturday morning. Now, it is expected to clear out of the area even sooner.

According to Outlaw, the storm should leave the area somewhere between Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon. The storm system will then shift north into North Carolina and North Virginia as it tapers off Thursday night or Friday.

“It’s pretty much over with,” he said.

A street in Charleston, South Carolina, was flooded by Tropical Storm Debby on Aug. 6, 2024. The storm has stalled over the Southeast U.S., where it is expected to drop 10-20 inches of rain over the next few days.
