A trio of West Aussies have claimed gold in the cycling team pursuit as Australia closes in on a record-breaking day at the Olympic Games in Paris.
In pursuit of a record, Australia equal their 17th gold medal with the team pursuit side pipping Great Britain in the final with a time of 3.42.067.
The Australian quartet of Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy and Kelland O’Brien delivered the nation a record-tying 17th gold medal.
Bleddyn and Leahy are products of the Peel District Cycling Club and Welsford calls Northern Beaches Cycling Club home.
It was neck and neck the entire race, with Great Britain chasing the boys in gold – but a slip up at the very end gave Australia the edge and they took full advantage to take the win.
It was a tight race between the two sides with a lot of history in the event, but the Brits had trouble with their bike in the final lap – leading Australia to win their 17th gold by 2.327 seconds.
They blitzed the competition during the heat stages, setting a venue record before breaking the world record – sending them to the final against Great Britain.
They now tie the Australian record for most gold medals at an Olympic Games with 17 and still days left to compete.
