Primary election results for Michigan’s US House races – MASHAHER


Michigan’s Democratic and Republican primaries went pretty much according to predictions, as far as the state’s U.S. congressional races were concerned. Here’s a quick rundown of the winners and the vote totals. (As always, come back to freep.com for updated vote totals)

1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Upper Peninsula, northern Lower Peninsula): Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, handily defeated Roscommon veteran Josh Saul, winning the GOP primary 79% to 21%, with nearly 99% of the vote in. Bergman will face Democrat Callie Barr, a veterans’ advocate and lawyer in Traverse City, who beat Marquette’s Bob Lorinser 58% to 42%, with about 97% of the vote in.

2ND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Mid-Michigan): Both U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Caledonia, and Democrat Michael Lynch, of Alma, who works as a manager with the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, were unopposed in their primaries.

3RD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (west Michigan, Grand Rapids): U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten easily beat west Michigan businessman Salim Al-Shatel in the Democratic primary 91% to 9%, with 99% of the vote counted. East Grand Rapids lawyer Paul Hudson defeated Grand Haven entrepreneur Michael Markey in the GOP primary, winning 55% to 45%, with 99% of the vote tallied.

4TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (west and southwest Michigan): U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Holland Township, easily defeated Holland project manager Brendan Muir in the Republican primary, winning 73% to 27%, with 95% of the vote in. Kalamazoo lawyer Jessica Swartz was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

5TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (south central Michigan): U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, and Democratic retired steelworker Libbi Urban, of Buchanan, were unopposed in their primaries.

6TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Washtenaw, parts of Wayne and Oakland counties): U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Ann Arbor, and Republican Heather Smiley, who retired as an analyst for Ford, were unopposed in their primaries.

7TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (mid-Michigan, Lansing): Former state Sen. Tom Barrett, R-Charlotte, and former state Sen. Curtis Hertel, D-Lansing, were unopposed in their primaries in this open, toss-up district.

8TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Bay City, Flint, Saginaw, Midland): State Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet of Bay City won the Democratic primary to this open, toss-up seat, winning 53% of the vote, to 26% for former Flint Mayor Matt Collier and 20% for state Board of Education President Pamela Pugh of Saginaw, with 87% of the overall vote tallied. Paul Junge of Grand Blanc won the Republican primary. With 88% of the vote in, he had 75% of the vote to 15% for Mary Draves of Midland, and 10% for Anthony Hudson, a small businessman in Grand Blanc.

9TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Thumb, northern Macomb and Oakland counties): U.S. Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Bruce Township, and Democratic insurance agent Clint St. Mosley of Lake Orion, were unopposed in their primaries.

10TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (southern Macomb County, Rochester, Rochester Hills): U.S. Rep. John James, of Shelby Township, was unopposed in the Republican primary. Former Macomb County Judge Carl Marlinga of Sterling Heights won the Democratic primary. With 98% of the vote tallied, Marlinga had 49%; Warren financial planner Diane Young, 25%; state Board of Education member Tiffany Tilley of West Bloomfield had just over 13%; and Emily Busch of Oxford had just under 13%.

11TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (southeastern Oakland County): U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham, easily defeated Ferndale activist Ahmed Ghanim in the Democratic primary, winning 87% to 13%, with 98% of the vote tallied. She faces Bingham Farms criminal defense and personal injury lawyer Nick Somberg, who won the Republican primary over Bingham Farms attorney Charles Frangie, 61% to 39%, with 99% of the vote in.

12TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Detroit, Dearborn, Wayne County): U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, was unopposed in the Democratic primary. James Hooper, of Livonia, who has done missionary work, was declared the winner in the Republican primary. With 98% of the vote tallied, Hooper had a 61% to 39% lead over Linda Sawyer, a former emergency room nurse, also of Livonia.

13TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT (Detroit, Downriver): U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Detroit, defeated Detroit City Council Member Mary Waters and Shakira Lynn Hawkins, according to a call made by The Associated Press, based on unofficial results. With 98% of the vote tallied, Thanedar led, with 54% of the vote to 34% for Waters and 11% for Hawkins. Martell Bivings, a former business liaison for the Detroit Economic Development Corp., was unopposed in the Republican primary.
