Tropical Storm Debby is most likely to flood these spots in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill – MASHAHER

As Tropical Storm Debby is expected to drop heavy rain across North Carolina in the coming days, the Triangle — with its rolling hills and valleys — faces flooding danger.

Some areas are prone to floodwaters blocking roads and seeping into homes — such as Chapel Hill’s Camelot Village condominium complex or the neighborhoods surrounding Raleigh’s Crabtree Creek.

The City of Raleigh maintains flood monitoring cameras near streams and flood-prone areas to help with its emergency response and to alert residents when the waters rise. The cameras do not provide public live-streams.

The city also provides information and a map of areas where repeated flooding has occurred. The map is updated as conditions in those areas change.

Wake, Durham and Orange counties send out alerts via text, email and phone when there is a high risk of flooding and during other severe weather events. Sign up for ReadyWake Alerts at readywake.com/readywake-alerts. Sign up for AlertDurham notifications at alertdurham.com. Sign up for OCAlerts at orangecountync.gov/OCAlerts.

Chapel Hill spokesperson Alex Carrasquillo said the town tracks potential flooding through the National Weather Service and the U.S. Geological Survey’s sensor network in local rivers and streams. Town crews have already started cleaning storm drains to mitigate some of the potential flooding, he added.

Some of the most floodprone areas to avoid in the Triangle are listed below. If we missed an area that experiences frequent or dangerous flooding, send your suggestions to [email protected].
