JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A crash on I-64 Thursday evening caused major delays in the westbound lanes.

The crash scene is at mile marker 246, near Lee Hall.

VDOT cameras showed a vehicle in the median. They also showed that the roads were wet at the time of the crash, which was reported at 3 p.m..

Virginia State Police initially said this was a single-vehicle crash with injuries, but later provided an update saying there were actually two vehicles involved.

According to state police, their investigation revealed a BMW traveling at a high rate of speed on westbound I-64 tried to change lanes in front of a tractor-trailer but ended up hitting it. The driver of the BMW lost control and crashed.

The Newport News Fire Department released images from the scene that show the mangled guardrail wrapped around the damaged vehicle.

State police said the BMW driver was seriously injured.

The west left shoulder and left lane remain closed as crews work to clear the scene.

At 4 p.m., traffic backups were approximately 2.5 miles. By 4:30 p.m., the backup had increased to 7 miles.
