Filmmaker Farhan Akhtar disclosed a surprising revelation about the casting process for his iconic film Don (2006). Akhtar revealed on Raj Shamani’s podcast that Hrithik Roshan was initially his first choice for the lead role. However, despite giving his word to Hrithik, Akhtar ultimately decided that Shah Rukh Khan would be a better fit for the character. This decision, according to Akhtar, was not an easy one, as he had a strong professional relationship with Hrithik and had initially committed to offering him the role.

The call to Hrithik: A moment of grace
When Farhan Akhtar realized that Shah Rukh Khan was the ideal choice for the role of Don, he knew he had to make a difficult phone call to Hrithik Roshan. In a conversation on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Akhtar recounted how he reached out to Hrithik to discuss his change of heart. Hrithik’s response was nothing short of gracious. Farhan recalled Hrithik telling him, “You have to make your film in the best way possible. If you think Shah Rukh is the right choice, go ahead and call him. Don’t worry about me.” This response from Hrithik, according to Akhtar, exemplified professionalism and maturity.
Hrithik and Farhan: A continued collaboration
Despite not working together on Don, Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar have shared the screen in other successful projects. They both starred in Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), which became a cult classic and showcased their on-screen chemistry. Farhan also directed Hrithik in Luck By Chance (2009), where Hrithik played a pivotal role. Their professional relationship remains strong, underscored by mutual respect and collaboration. Interestingly, Hrithik played a cameo in Don 2, the sequel to Don.
Ranveer Singh takes over as Don
With Shah Rukh Khan having stepped away from the role of Don, the mantle has now been passed to Ranveer Singh for the upcoming Don 3. Farhan Akhtar’s decision to cast Shah Rukh Khan in the original film set a high bar for the franchise, and it remains to be seen how Ranveer Singh will make the role his own.
