Mahesh Bhatt’s 1982 directorial venture, Arth, is often credited as a turning point in his career. While it was speculated that the film was inspired by Yash Chopra’s Silsila, released a year earlier, Bhatt has categorically denied these claims.

Arth: A Personal Journey
In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that Arth was born out of his own experiences. “I made Arth taking an inspiration from my own experiences,” he said. Far from being a mere imitation of Silsila, Bhatt stated that his film was a bold experiment undertaken at a crucial juncture in his career. “The first four films that I made were flops,” he confessed. “So, when it was almost like the end of my career, I thought why not take a risk before leaving.”
A Different Take on Infidelity
Bhatt also drew a stark contrast between his film and Silsila. “When I was making this film, people came to me and said, ‘You are a flop director already and on top of that you are making a film like Arth? Are you aware that Yash Chopra is making a big banner film on the same lines with Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar and Rekha?'” he recalled.
However, Bhatt remained steadfast in his vision. “My take was that you don’t have an extramarital affair and dance in tulip gardens. It’s a secret relationship. People keep it a secret and the feeling is filled with guilt,” he explained. “When you put a little bit of realness in your film, then audiences relate to it better and sense the truth.”
Arth resonated deeply with audiences, with many women claiming that the film mirrored their own experiences. Interestingly, the film was reportedly inspired by Bhatt’s own extramarital affair with actor Parveen Babi, which led to the dissolution of his marriage to Kiran Bhatt.
